A Little Help Needed

Okay before I vent.... Let me just say that I have no problem with people that are this way. It is just not for me. A long time ago in a land a few miles away from where I reside now. There lived a princess named Jenn (me). And I used to love doing photography. I shot engagements, weddings, new babies, pregnancies and family's in abundance. I loved it. It was only when I decided to start making money doing it that it became a vile enemy for me. And I had to quit. It was no longer my passion. It made me sick to think I was making money using my talent. Something I love to make money... blah! That didn't work for me. Well I look around at the other hair bloggers who have ad's on the side of there blog and I hear about the money they are making. It can be very impressive to say the least. I, however, fear that if I start allowing ad's on my page that it will turn my hobby into a money maker rather then a hobby. And I know that is how a lot of them get the traffic they have as well. And you know what--- that doesn't sell me either. I think traffic is cool. I love when my counter used to be over 1000 every day. It hasn't hit that in a while. Its still high and that is flattering in itself. But I would hate to think I was doing any part of this for the spot light. You know what I mean? So I find myself conflicted and I would like your advise. As readers of Girly Do's--- I would like to sell my curlers and start making money for my families end of the year Christmas time service project. If I started making extra money now we could stretch it a lot further then just the blankets we did last year for the foster kids. I (personally) would like to do a meal at the Holmes Family Shelter. And I would also like to do the snacks for kids charity that sends kids that rely on school for there meals a snack pack for over the holiday vacation so that they don't go hungry during that time. So..."IF" I decide to sell my curlers (and that is a big IF) would that turn you away from the ad free zone that Girly Do's is? AND.. how do you feel about the advertisements on blog pages?

  1. Oh my goodness, if I had that much traffic on my blog, I would totally do that. Not because I am greedy, but because the opportunity is there and if you can make some extra money doing it, go for it. Believe me, I do not turn away from blogs with advertisements, they have never annoyed me. I go to the sites for their hair ideas and such and because I have no idea how to do hair in cute ways, so I say go for it! What a sweet service project. I love when families get together to help other families in need.

  2. Adds don't bug me unless they are HUGEMONGOUS. I don't see any problem with selling your curlers. I mean, it IS for charity and stuff, so that should ease your thoughts a little about the "money making" part of it. It isn't like it's going right into your fun money.

  3. I am not turned off by the ad's on the other blogs. Some of the blogs do not need ad's to get high traffic, but I think if they can make some extra money doing something they love, then more power to them. If you decide to sell your curlers I think that would be awesome, especially since you are using the money for such a wonderful cause.

  4. DO IT!!! I personally don't care about the ads being there - I will most definitely still visit your site. And if the money to sell your curlers goes to charity - YOU ROCK!!! Well, you do no matter what really. But that is really a great thing you do each Christmas for others. Thank you for this blog - I love it!!!

    I totally understand what you mean when you say getting paid can make a hobby no fun. I feel the same way and have always admired people who can make it work! I wish I could figure that out!

    But as a casual reader, I would not at all mind seeing ads here. Of course I prefer add-free sites, but honestly I think people are accustomed to "tuning out" the ads they want to ignore, so don't worry about it. The bottom line is, I'm here to see your hairdos and as long as that's available, I'll keep checking!

  6. Not that my opinion should count for anything - this is totally YOU and how YOU feel about it - but I would go for the ads! You do us a huge service with what you share on your blog. Seriously. And I know firsthand how much time and thought goes into tutorials. I think there is nothing wrong with being paid for it! And I think it's a fabulous idea to sell your curlers, too! Why not? I say go for it!

  8. I love your blog, and I love all of your hair designs. The only advertiseing that I do not like is anything that is sexual. Even suggestive sexual. I like learning about new hair products.

  10. I think it is a wonderful idea to sell your curlers to save for your family service project. That wouuldn't turn my off to your blog at all. I LOVE your blog. I come here for sute hair ideas to try on my kids. My opinion on ads on blogs...I don't mind them, ads are on everything, everywhere now. I like that your blog doesn't drown you in ads...it's just cute hair and stuff, but, if you did choose to add ads to your blog I will still read it just as much and try new hairdo's on my girls. Thank you for all of your insiration. My girls have much cuter hair thanks to hair blogs like yours...especially yours. Thank you.

  11. Ads make some blogs look junky in my opinion and I do get turned off to a blog with too many. However, YOU selling YOUR product for something that helps many really isn't much different than a fundraiser. You are just getting your product out there, not pushing whatever else comes your way to make money.

  12. Honestly, I never give the ads on anyone's blog a glance. I just ignore them and don't pay any attention and they don't bother me at all. But I do love your curlers, and I think a lot of people would be lining up to buy them. So as long as you think you have the time to make them, you should sell them. You could count me, my sister, my friends, anyone I know with little girls as customers, because once I can buy some I'm going to tell everybody!

  14. I say go for it. Ads don't bother as long as they aren't huge or sexual as others have said. I have actually found a few wholesale sites for hair doodads from them, but usually I justr ignore them. You should sell your curlers as well. There are lots of people out there who are missing out on cute curls just because they don't sew, you would be doing them a favor really! :)

  15. Ads don't bug me either, and I think you should totally sell your curlers! I've thought about putting ads on my blog... I get about 1,100 hits a day, but, like you, it doesn't bug me for other people to have ads, I just don't know that I want ads on mine. It's a tough decision. I totally think you should sell the curlers though... then I can buy some! haha

    I also wouldn't have a problem if they were on your blog. I glance every now and then, but if I'm not interested, then I just ignore.

Share your talent, give it a try and then decide if you really want to do it or not.As long as you don't change who you are, you are good to go, good change is improvement!

  22. I say that if you can make extra cash for your family.. using it where you see fit.. then go for it! As far as ads, I read all my favorites on Google reader so I don't see any ads and just get to see the GOOD STUFF!! *wink* :-)

I think it's a great thing to do for a great cause and if those kids can get something to eat because of what you've done, then you're superhero avatar is put to good use - Using your mad hair skills to save the world, one snack at a time! Okay, that was cheesy, but you get what I mean - go for it!

  24. I love that you are wanting to use the money you would make to help others. That just shows the kind of person you are. I say go for it. I am like you and, although don't judge others for doing it, don't appreciate everything being made into a cash grab. I find that when traffic increases on people's blogs, they often get coccky and arrogant and start (or continue) talking (or joking) about how amazing they are. You already have tremendous traffic because of your talent and it hasn't affected you negativily at all. You are an amazing person that can handle it. Especially knowing that a portion of the money is going to do some amazing good, people would definitely put up with adds. I would and I roll my eyes at them with a smile:) Do whatever you think is best! Good luck!!

  27. I think the ads are a good idea. Like someone said, we are accumstoned to tuning them out anyway. And if it helps you out, I say go for it! Plus, you don't have to neccessarily DO anything to get paid for it, unlike the photography and curlers. I think because of that, it wouldn't interfere with you blogging. As for the curlers, I would hate to see you lose your love for those. Just a thought...what about selling the instructions...if you don't want to make a bijillion curlers. You could even sell them at craft/fabric stores (like Brooke's in Bountiful). They sell lots of homemade patterns (I've bought some!) Anyway, I am rambling, so good luck with your decisions. If you decide to sell a pattern for the curlers, I'll be on you list of buyers...I'm a do-it-myself-er personally.

  28. Offering your curlers to your readers would be a wonderful service! I have never been a huge fan of ads, but I have also found some incredible products through ads that were specifically related to what I was reading. It can be easy to get distracted by money. But so long as your focus remains on the reason you started all of this, you'll be fine! It is rare for a person's passion to fall in line with her income potential... I say go for it!

  30. I just took a peak at several other blogs I have bookmarked and realise quite a few have adverts. I guess I just never really noticed them! Anyway, I love the hair style ideas here so no, I'm not about to let some adverts keep me from coming back for new ideas!

    Do what you like. Someone will always have a negative opinion, others will understand and others just won't care. You have a talent and you take the time and trouble to share it here with others. If that can also produce a little income from that work, then why not?

  32. I say go for it too! Ads don't really bother me. You are working very hard at this blog and deserve to be paid for it. I'm using lots of your hair dos at home. Most of the time I ignore the ads, but it doesn't bother me for anyone to make money from them. It's wonderful that you would use yoru $ from the curlers for service! That's great.

  33. Jenn, I'd say go for it...sell 'em if you want...it's YOUR site! I don't ever even look at the ads on people's side bars...They also slow the computer down and it takes longer for it to load the page with the ads on the sidebar...That's my 1 bits! :D

  34. I have never paid any attention to ads. I didn't even know people get paid for having them. That's a no brainer to me. If you can get paid, do it! It's not going to bother the vast majority. And for those it does bother, they are the kind of people who have an opinion about anything and everything!

  36. Go ahead and do the advertisements on the side. If they don't infringe on someone who isn't interested in clicking on them, what's the harm? If someone doesn't want to look at them then they don't have to.

    The curlers are very cute and I also see no problem with selling something you make to people who visit your blog. I mean, we all are getting free hair styling ideas. The least we could do is not whine about you trying to bring in a little bit of funds for the work that you put into your blog. That's my take on it anyway.

  38. I know you like honesty, so I am just going to put it out there. I think it is fine if you advertise as long as it is along the side of your blog. I already feel like you have been advertising for your friend that makes bows. They are cute and I am not knocking it, but you mentioned her products many times, so I don't see the difference. I love your hairstyles and will always check your site for cute ideas. As long as you keep doing awesome hair, I don't care what "extras" are included in the site. You're the best!

  42. OK...I would like to add that I did put the ads on the side of my blog this past week. It has been four days and we have made 16 cents! Yes, that's right, 16 cents. I don't know how people are rolling in the money from blog ads. I may just get rid of mine. I'm not in it for the money but the fun and to share with other dear sisters about the fun of hair! I'm afraid that checking my lack of $$ is taking the fun out of my hair blog...it is starting to feel like a job. I just have to ignore the stupid ads! Grrrrr. venting here.

I love what I do and I make money:> I do know what you mean though.I do hair and when you HAVE to be creative to make a living it takes some of the fun out of the creativity.My blog is just my hobby though but I do advertise my webstore because I have my blog for my customers and I post my upcoming sales and new items there as well.The ads dont bug me unless there are like a billion ads with flash animations that take a while to load on my laptop.

  45. Who gives a flying crap about ads on sites. Its the INTERNET. Ads are a part of the scenery. It helps pay for people to write, host, and spend time on whatever it is they are sharing. Moms who have ads lets me know they are savvy.
